Who doesn't love a good macrame piece? | Woven by Ro
Robyn and I met while I lived in Arizona for year! She has such a sweet spirit about her, always so kind and generous! I had the honor of photographing her sweet family and she created this huge wallhanging for me. She also made the smaller one with the brass touches. I love both pieces so much. The details in each are beautifully done and I am really just obsessed with everything she makes! I love when creatives are able to share their talents with each other! I wanted you to get to know a bit more about Robyn and her beautiful macrame work.
Robyn is a wife, a mama and has a full time business doing what she loves. She has her own online store, she hosts workshops and she works closely with West Elm Scottsdale, AZ. I love that her business, Woven by Ro, continues to grow!!
1. Tell us a little about yourself and how you’ve got to where you are.
I have always loved being creative. It's one of the things that makes me feel most alive. I love experiencing beauty.
2. How did you begin Woven by Ro? Where did you get your name from?
I found my love for fiber art in 2014 after coming across a great online weaving tutorial. I instantly fell in love with weaving. At the time I was working as a pediatric nurse and weaving on the side for my friends and family. We moved from Seattle to Phoenix in 2015. I decided to leave my position at the hospital to stay at home and care for our son. I filled the nap times and evening pursuing a creative outlet by weaving and learning the art of modern macrame. I first received the nickname Ro as a summer camp counselor. When I began weaving I had several requests for something woven by Ro. The name just stuck!
3. What inspired you to begin making wall hangings?
I made my first weaving for our house with a couple skeens of yarn from the local craft store. That weaving still hangs on our wall to this day. It reminds me of where I started and how much I've grown as an artist. I soon began making and giving away my pieces to anyone that asked for one. I was just so honored to have something I made in someone else's home. I'm still blown away by the requests I get from people all over the country.
4. What has been your biggest challenge as a business owner?
At times I have struggled to stay on top of the more "tasky" side of running a business. Answering emails, branding, packaging and promoting don't necessarily come natural to me. Thankfully I've had a lot of help from my family and I've received tons of advice from other small business owners. It really takes a village.
5. What is your biggest hope for your business?
I would love to continue to connect with our community and to build deeper relationships with clients and other artists. I really enjoy teaching workshops and being a part of local craft fairs.My hope is that I will continue to find my specific voice as an a maker.
6. How do you balance being a wife, mama and business owner?
What began as a side project quickly turned into a small business before I even had a chance to decide what that was going to look like. My first priority is to my family and being a Mama. I have had to learn how to juggle my time between creating/managing a business and devoting my time to being present in our home. I'm still trying to find the balance. But I will say that being able to create and interact with other makers has made me a better wife and mother. I'm so thankful for this season of life.
